The magic of a silver needle
Acupuncture has been used for treatment for thousands of years in China, and today it is one of the most well known traditional Chinese medicine in the West.
I majored in traditional Chinese medicine in university and have been an acupuncturist in Denmark for more than 20 years. People came to my clinic suffering from various illnesses, I used only a small silver needle to cure them.
One winter came in a tall and slim young man to my clinic in thin clothes, not in line with the cold and windy weather of the Danish winter.
"My left chest is painful, feeling chest pressure and difficulty breathing," he told me.
"Left chest pain" is usually the early symptoms of heart disease. Although it is more common for elderly people, it is not uncommon for a young guy like him. But it could be other problems, I thought.
The basic method of disease diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine is to observe(Wang), listen(Wen), ask(Wen) and feel(Qie).
The observation of the young man was: pale face with pale tongue and slight dark lips, and cold limbs.
I then felt his pulse: deep but regular, meaning that his body was in cold winter, but his heart is fine. I asked him to tell me more about it, and he said that he had always been healthy, but something went wrong when he was in Denmark.
The young man was a student from Australia, planning to study half a year in Denmark. Since he wanted to improve his competence of cold resistance, he deliberately wore fewer clothes to exercise him, even though he felt cold.
After a week in Denmark, his chest started to be painful and he felt difficult to breathe. It had been three weeks before he came to me. He was worried, wondering if he could manage to complete study in Denmark.
From hot Australia in summer to the cold and humid Denmark in the winter abruptly, and exercised himself in an incorrect way, the young man got sick. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the cold air had invaded his body and he lost the balance of yin and yang in his body.
To make his body rebalanced, the excessive yin presented in coldness should be reduced, and the deficiency of yang which presents in warmness should be strengthened in his chest and lungs.
Acupuncture works by stimulating acupuncture points on the meridians (or energy channels), which is able to resolve the imbalances in the body and remove the energy blockages.
I decided to use needles to strengthen the yang to clear the collaterals, which could open the chest and nourish Qi to balance the yin and yang.
"I feel relaxed and very comfortable, "the young man told me during the needling process.
It works! Acupuncture helped yang got restored.
I told the young man to keep warm after the treatment before he left.
A week later, he came for the second round of treatment, telling me happily: "My chest pain has gone and my breathing is normal now."
He recovered completely after two treatments.
Acupuncture is a good recipe for the illnesses, but the better one is to be harmonious with nature, living a healthy life. In this way, yin and yang can be kept in balance to avoid physical or mental illnesses.
According to Chinese traditional medicine ideology, the unity of heaven and the human can make people healthy and harmonious, and the human body is considered as a small universe.
Qi and blood in the body are like the water of a river, which can be condensed if they encounter the coldness and don’t run properly; the meridian will be oppressed and contracted, so qi and blood are blocked and are not able to flow smoothly. Then comes the pain.
Since this young man did not pay attention to keep warm in winter, his body was invaded by the cold air, and yang got affected and lost. As a result, he suffered from pain in his chest, stress, and difficulty in breathing.
A small silver needle can adjust the body's yin-yang balance, remove the illnesses without medication or injections, without heart and lung examination. It is magic in body recovery.
It is amazing!
Being an acupuncturist, I am so proud of traditional Chinese medicine.
